Scott Smith, MD, JD is a non-equity partner and registered patent attorney, based in Seager, Tufte & Wickhem’s Minneapolis office. Scott has been practicing for over 25 years, providing IP and general legal advice primarily to medical device companies. Having spent the first half of his legal career in Silicon Valley, Scott focuses much of his work on serving privately held, venture backed, medical device startup companies, building patent portfolios and IP strategies from the ground up, navigating freedom to operate, and helping guide his clients and companies through financing rounds and successful exits. Scott has worked in top tier law firms and in-house, and he brings a practical, strategic, business oriented approach to his work for clients.
Prior to joining Seager Tufte & Wickhem LLP, Scott worked in-house as Senior Director, Assistant Chief IP Counsel at Solventum, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Aerin Medical, Vice President of IP and Legal Affairs at Pulmonx, Director of IP at Acclarent, Vice President of IP at Baxano, and Patent Counsel at Align Technology. Scott received an M.D. from the University of Arizona College of Medicine, a J.D. from the Ohio State University College of Law, and a B.A. in Political Science from Northwestern University.
Scott is licensed to practice in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as well as the state courts of Minnesota and California.
