Rick Dyer is a registered patent attorney with the intellectual property law firm of Seager Tufte Wickhem. Rick has worked in both private practice and as in-house counsel and has worked on matters involving electronic design tools, electronic device and circuit manufacturing processes, analog and digital circuits, optics, displays, memory technology, wireless systems, robotics, autonomous vehicles and systems, medical devices, virtual reality, machine learning, blockchain, and a variety of other technologies.

Rick has experience drafting and prosecuting patents and has worked extensively with clients to prepare patents for use in licensing agreements and litigation. Rick has prepared numerous opinions of counsel characterizing a patent as invalid, not infringed, or both. Rick has also worked closely with clients to support efforts to build and manage global patent portfolios as well as to protect their intellectual property through copyrighting and by performing open source software audits. In addition, Rick has worked with clients to support licensing activity as well as merger and acquisition activity including reviewing and evaluating patent and trademark portfolios, performing freedom to operate searches, reviewing contracts for material issues, drafting contracts, and negotiating terms. Rick has also assisted clients in enforcing their intellectual property through evaluating potential infringement claims, advising business units on enforcement options, contacting adverse parties, and negotiating resolutions.

Prior to joining our firm, Rick was a partner at Kacvinsky Daisak Bluni from 2013 until 2022 and of counsel at Omikron IP Law Group from 2012 to 2013. Before working in private practice, Rick worked as in-house counsel at Mentor Graphics Corporation from 2007 to 2012. During law school Rick worked for Intel Corporation as an intern in their legal group. Prior to law school, Rick worked as an engineer for nLight photonics and also as a graduate researcher in a machine learning laboratory attached to Portland State University.

Rick received a J.D. from Lewis and Clark Law School and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Physics from Portland State University. Rick is licensed to practice in both Washington and Oregon.
