John Shudy is a registered patent attorney and Of Counsel at the intellectual property law firm of Seager, Tufte & Wickhem in the firm’s Minneapolis, Minnesota office.
John’s practice concentrates on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the U.S. and abroad, in the electronic, mechanical, optical arts, and software.
Prior to joining the firm in 2002, John was an associate general counsel for Honeywell International Inc., and before that, he was the senior patent attorney and an executive at Honeywell Inc., where he gained valuable experience in corporate and litigation matters. For instance, John participated in preparation of briefs and arguments with counsels for Honeywell and Westview Instruments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court in the Litton Systems v. Honeywell and Markman v. Westview Instruments lawsuits.
John previously was on the staff at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit as an attorney, and was a patent attorney with the Office of Naval Research.
John received a J.D., cum laude, from Gonzaga University, a Ph.D. and A.M. in Philosophy with an emphasis on science and logic, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri. Prior to entering graduate and law schools, John was an electrical engineer and gained first-hand design experience relative to various electronic devices and systems. He was also a senior commissioned officer with the U.S. Navy Reserve Intelligence.
